The prophecy in Harry Potter was told by Sybill Trelawney and tied Harry and Voldemort together. The prophecy predicted that one must die at the other's hand because “neither can live while the other survives”. Voldemort chose to believe that Harry was the one meant and targeted him to eliminate the threat. In doing so, he unknowingly set the prophecy in motion by "marking him as his equal".
